WEEK 12

500 WORD DRAFT

My Vision
The idea developed for the redesign of the Vitra came down to the complicated but effortless conclusion of Modernism. Modernism is the foundation of the direction that will be revealed in this re-design. Although modernism will be the base of my scheme, evident indications of traditionalism are present. There are two major factors which will be modified. First is completely re-inventing the structure whilst including characteristics of the Vitra. Second is to shift the functionally of the building from a public space to a private space, (a home).

Function

This re-design is a home, contrastingly to the vitra design museum it is no longer a public building. Divergent from the Vitra, the space was designed to accommodate people, for personal, lifestyle and leisure purposes. This structure is specifically aimed at those who prefer to live by themselves and an age group preferably above 19.

Description

The overall content and concept of the structure is a (not too distant) futuristic modern house. This three story house is composed of materials such as concrete, glass, and steel. The first floor consist of the lounge space, second floor includes a more private area within the building. The second floor also includes a sun baking which gives access to the sun as part of the second floor is partially open. The final third floor, the roof of the house has a pool and a BBQ/kitchen area. A certain proportion of glass above the second floor and beneath the third floor acts as the functionality of the main light receiver for the outside.

Exterior in detail

The exterior of the building presents a futuristic feel with its transparent glass material contrasted to the white base of the entire structure. The straight edges and clean engraved corners produce a modernistic concept. As the redesign is meant to reflect the Vitra Design museum, the most distinctive and discrete form has been moulded into the design. The noticeable hefty cross form has been placed at the front of the structure.

Interior in detail

The interior of the building brings forth a studio feel. There are no separate rooms composed within the house. The structure is separated by the spaces and the floors. The living and lounge is located on the ground floor and the private spaces are located on the second floor. There is a small kitchen area on the third floor next to the pool. With the core interior of the three floors there is a elevator. The stairs only accompany the person from the first floor to the second. To access the thirds floor the person must take the elevator from the first or second floor.

Characteristic of the vitra

There are several features of the Vitra design museum which can be seen in this re design. Firstly the materials and colour contrast of the buildings have been taken to consideration pulling off a similarity context between the two.

The main and most evident characteristic taken from the Vitra would be the object form of the cross. This has been expanded and multiplied in the re-design. Firstly the cross shape form has been moulded on to the front of the house, to reveal its presence of a feature of the Vitra. Also at the core of the building, the elevator is basically a extended version of the cross shape. This elevator stretches from the ground level to the roof.

DIRECTION
The idea developed for the redesign of the Vitra came down to the simple effortless conclusion of Modernism. Modernism is the foundation of the direction that will be revealed in this re-design. Clean cut corners and walls with a combination of materials such as steel and glass may be incorporated into the model. The initial idea was to create a public space, plainly just re moulding the Vitra Design Museum. However that idea has been changed in two ways. First is to completely re-invent the structure whilst including characteristics of the Vitra. Second is to shift from a public space to a private space, (a home).

WEEK 10

Re-envision VITRA

The re-envision I have considered was much and has always been influenced by the architect Tadao Ando. Ever since I became familiar with his works, it has brought to my attention; I love his style in architecture. I always felt that his architecture brought a inspiration of traditional and modern ideas, something I have always felt passionate about (for example “The church of light”). Thus, my re-envision of the VITRA will obviously lean towards the clean cut modern architecture produced by Ando however initiating a divergent concept.

I plan to completely re-invent the entire structure, giving it my personal touch in style. However there will be prominent characteristics of the VITRA which will be clearly evident in its features. The exterior and interior materials will be consistent of concrete, glass and steel and wood for the time being. I am currently uncertain and still contemplating on the functionality; however I am leaning towards creating a public spaced structure, not a private one.

FRANK GEHRY WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL

The Walt Disney concert hall is to become the permanent home of Los Angeles Philharmonic. The Hals is positioned on historic Hunker Hill, adjacent to the music center of Los Angeles. The project began as an invited design competition.

Several design elements have advanced since the competition, most notably the Hall’s shape and figure, the foyer size, and the elimination of a chamber hall and the 350 room hotel. The Design started in 1987 as which construction began in 1999 to the inauguration in 2003, a total of 16 years.

The elegant curves of Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles are farmiliar to those interested in contemporary architecture. With a building skin stretched tight and tolerances shaved to a thousandth of an inch, there was simply no room for industry standards. A fresh breed of ironworker was needed, one who relies on modern utensils such as lasers, yet whose forms wielding hammers hundreds of feet above the ground testify still to the great unchanging tradition of their trade.

The stainless steels curves of its striking exterior to the state of the art acoustics of the hardwood panelled main auditorium, Frank Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. This is one of the most acoustically sophisticated concert halls in the world. This construction is a new architectural landmark, generating as much excitement as Gehrys Guggenheim Museum Bilbae.

ARCHITECTS

Taodo Ando

Born in Osaka Japan 1941,Tadao Ando was the first born of the 2 twin boys. As a young boy Ando created a lot of wood models such as airplanes, ships and moulds. In his early twenties Ando undertook a self directed course of architectural study that took him throughout Japan to visit teahouses and temples, to Europe, Africa and to the United States. The way he studied architecture was quite divergent from ordinary architectural students. He travelled the world observing and analysing actual buildings, and reading books about architectures works such as Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn. Just before he returned to Osaka he opened his own studio at the age of 28, Tadao Ando Architect & Associates. Ando has been a visiting professor at Harvard University, Tokyo University and Yale University.

AZUMA HOUSE

This Azuma House is one of the best works ever produced by the self taught architect Ando. The house is split into spaces situated to daily life by the insertion of an abstract space for the wind and light. He says his goal was to present the question on the inertia that has invaded human dwellings. As an outcome of this brilliant project, Ando received an award from the Japan Association of Architecture in 1976.

This apartment is situated on a lot of 57sqm. The total square footage of 65sqm is split into 3 sections: 2 floors and a patio. This box of concrete occupies the enitire area.

The reinforced concrete used in this house is presented as the ornamentation for the facade.

"In its simple but rich spatial composition, in its expression of enclosure, and in the way light gives character to daily-life spaces, this house encapsulates an image of my architecture."Tadao Ando

Le Corbusier

Background

Le Corbusier was born on the 6th of October, 1887 in LaChaux de Fonds, Switzerland. The family traced their ancestry to the Cathars who fled to the Jura Mountains during the Albigensian War, and the French Huguenots, who migrated to Switzerland following the Edict of Nantes 1598. His families love of arts, and enthusiasm for the Jura Mountains, were all formative influences on the the young Le Corbusier. Charles L’Eplattenier, a local art teacher dominated his education.

After some years spent studying at the towns art school, he continued his career by himself, travelling. His meeting with the Perret brothers who were architects, was a determining factor to his concrete constructions. He has constructed over 75 buildings in 12 different countries, and was involved in over 200 projects. He unfortunately died in an accident on the 27th of August 1965 at Roquenbrune Cap Martin during the construction of the Firminy Vert district.

Villa la Roche

Villa La Roche was built as a home for Raoul La Roche, a Swiss banker/collector of avant-garde art. The purpose of the house was to display La Roche’s private extensive art collection. It was built in a private Paris courtyard. Within the building, to exhibit the art, a theme inspired by Le Corbrusier’s visit to the Acropolis in 1911 and repeated most strikingly in his carpenter centre for the visual arts nearly forty years later. The walkway goes up and down the staircases, leads through you through tight spaces, in between balconies, open surveys, down ramps and into a library. The initiative of a spatial sequence was re-invented by modern architects after Le Corbrusier.
